AltarWings: The Birds of America 1993 (detail)
First exhibited 30 years ago, this work has been in a private collection and is now being restored. Wings of each bird species, first painted by John James Audubon in the 1830's, are being brightened and surrounded with fresh gold paint.
Currently, the grid of fluttering pages is 11 feet high by 21.5 feet wide. The viewer can bird watch through binoculars on the tree stump pedestal.
